A new book titled “The Emergence of Kurdish Nationalism and the Sheikh Said Rebellion, 1880-1925” has been published. The book was written by Robert Olson and translated from English by Ibrahim Bingol. It has been released by Avesta Publishing House.
First Western-language Study
This book is the first Western-language study analyzing the development of Kurdish nationalism. It includes new documents from the State Archives of Great Britain.
Olson provides new information on Turkish, Armenian, Iranian, and Arab history. He presents fresh perspectives on Turkish-Armenian relations.
The Role of Sheikhs in Kurdish Nationalism
Kurdish nationalism began during the era of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876-1909). The Sultan employed pan-Islamic policies against Europe and Russia.
Pan-Islamic doctrines led sheikhs to become leaders of Kurdish nationalism. This started with Sheikh Ubeydullah of Nehri and continued until Sheikh Said in the 1920s.
“Turkish History Cannot Be Written Without Kurds”
Prof. Olson states in his book: “Ottoman and Turkish history without examining Kurdish history is like writing American history without studying African Americans.”
William F. Tucker from the University of Arkansas also says: “I have personally researched the Sheikh Said Rebellion. Olson’s conclusions are new, evidence-based, and important!”
