A poetry collection by Bertolt Brecht titled “By the Roadside” has been translated from German by Serhat Aydın and published by Avesta Publishing House. The book contains selected poems by the internationally renowned poet.
The poem “By the Roadside” draws attention
In the book’s introduction, the poem with the same title “By the Roadside” stands out:
“I sit by the roadside. The driver changes the wheel. I am not pleased with where I’ve come from. I am not pleased with where I’m going. Why do I watch the wheel change With such impatience!”
Bertolt Brecht and his global influence
Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) is one of the most important playwrights and directors of the 20th century. He developed the theory of “epic theater” and his creations have had a substantial impact on world art. During his lifetime, he wrote approximately 2,300 poems, ranging from non-rhyming texts to classic epics with double rhyme schemes.
A poet against world war
Brecht expressed his stance against world war in his youth. He made his position clear with the statement “Death for the fatherland is honorable and worthy is merely a propaganda slogan appealing to empty-headed people.” Later in the 1920s, he began theatrical work and received the Kleist Award for his work “Drums in the Night.”
Work has been done to translate his oeuvre
In Turkey, many of the writer’s works have been translated by Yılmaz Onay. These include “Baal,” “Drums in the Night,” “Saint Joan of the Slaughterhouses,” “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” and many other works. Additionally, Brecht’s poems have been set to music by artists such as Arif Kemal.
